Driver Arrested After 100 MPH on Crosstown Bridge
Port St. Lucie Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop after observing a vehicle traveling at an excessive speed across the Crosstown Parkway Bridge, the department said.
Officers initially estimated the driver was traveling about 75 mph in a posted 45 mph zone. As the officer attempted to catch up, the driver continued accelerating, and police said the vehicle was ultimately paced at 100 mph while crossing the bridge.
Police identified the driver as 25-year-old Tyreek Russell. When asked why he was driving at such a high rate of speed, Russell told the officer he was late for work and believed his speed was justified because he was traveling in an open lane.
According to police, Florida’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding law, F.S.S. 316.1922, makes it a criminal offense to operate a motor vehicle 50 mph or more above the posted speed limit. Police said Russell was arrested, transported to the St. Lucie County Jail, and his vehicle was towed from the scene.
Police said the difference between the posted speed limit and the driver’s paced speed was 55 mph, and they noted that at 100 mph a vehicle travels nearly 150 feet every second.
